Basic getting chain back on chainring tricks:

1) The chain freewheels backwards. So turn the pedals backwards and you 
won't have to hold the rear wheel off the ground

2) Adjust the front derailleur, if there is one, to sit over the chainring 
on the side where the chain has comve off.

3) Something as simple as a stick or tire lever can be usedplaced on top of 
the lower run of chain to maneuver it down, then back up onto the teeth at 
the bottom of the chainwheel. Hold the bike upright with your shoulder, the 
tool in you left hand and turn the crank backward with your right. There is 
very rarely a need to touch the chain with your hands.
