Hi all:

In Response to Don's heads up about international
travel: I believe that the 50lb limit (which was
still 70lbs in August) applies to each bag, and not
total; ie. if your BF case weighs 40lbs, you can
still check another 50lb bag, and have a carry-on.
I've scrutinized the United Airline website over this
and am sure of 2 things. First- the site has changed
since August 15th when I last flew to London with my
AF packed right up to 49lbs, and a second bag of well
over 50lbs. I had printed out the "70lb statement" so
as to have some leverage with the check-in person
should they want to charge me. I don't see that
statement any more. Secondly, every time I've flown
overseas with my BF I've had another bag, always near
the weight limit, and ALWAYS it's been 2 checked bags,
each up to the limit before you pay extra/overweight
baggage fees.

On a different note: If anyone reading this is in the
London area, I'm thinking of starting a London BF
club. Let me know if interested- I know of lots of
great rides 40 miles and beyond... and it'd be fun not
to be the only folder at CTC rides...

Hope this helps.

Subject: [Yak] New airline baggage restrictions

Just a heads up for anyone considering international
travel with their
folding bike. I'm going to Paris tomorrow via United
Airlines, and I'm
glad
I checked the airline website beforehand.

New baggage weight restrictions have gone into effect
on 9-7-05. I
purchased my ticket long before then so I won't have
to abide by the
new
restrictions on this flight, but my understanding is
that the 70 lb.
limit
for two checked bags on an overseas flight is being
cut down to 50 lb.
for
two checked bags.

This means if you're taking a Friday in one case --
and most weigh 35 -
45
lb. with case -- you can't take another checked bag
without paying
extra. A
soft sided bag might work as a second checked bag
because it weighs
less
than a hard-sided one, but there would still be the 50
lb. limit on
both
bags.

Don
