Hi,
I went to United's web site and it is true, there is a new requirement but it states that it is 50 lbs each (or 23 kg each).
Here is the web site:
http://www.united.com/page/article/0,6722,51146,00.html#International%20travel%20baggage%20information
So, with a Friday in one case (35-45 lbs) and then another bag not exceeding 50 lbs you should be OK....but it does mean cutting way back on souvenirs and all the "fun" stuff.
With Delta and Northwest teetering on bankruptcy we will probably see more airlines implementing restrictions, let's hope they don't get too onerous....
Have a great trip, Paris in the fall!!! How wonderful...

Just a heads up for anyone considering international travel with their
folding bike. I'm going to Paris tomorrow via United Airlines, and I'm glad
I checked the airline website beforehand.
New baggage weight restrictions have gone into effect on 9-7-05. I
purchased my ticket long before then so I won't have to abide by the new
restrictions on this flight, but my understanding is that the 70 lb. limit
for two checked bags on an overseas flight is being cut down to 50 lb. for
two checked bags.
This means if you're taking a Friday in one case -- and most weigh 35 - 45
lb. with case -- you can't take another checked bag without paying extra. A
soft sided bag might work as a second checked bag because it weighs less
than a hard-sided one, but there would still be the 50 lb. limit on both
bags.
