[Yak] Italy report

Thanks to all the yaksters for the varied advice on the gearing
needed for conquering the steep grades in the Dolomites and Alps in
northern Italy. After careful consideration, I opted for a compact
crankset for my Air Friday and am glad I went that route. To those
who were of the opinion that the 39-26 gearing was sufficient, I am
awed by the power in your legs. On one particular leg, we climbed
four significant passes, including Paseo de Fedaia (Marmalada) and
Paseo Pordoi, and I was extremely happy to have the extra gears. The
gears were likewise handy on the 48 switchbacks leading to Paseo del
Stelvio. The only person who is unhappy is my orthopedic surgeon, who
was hoping I'd blow my knees and make him some money on replacement
joints.

Those who have ridden in Italy already know how wonderful it is to be
respected as a cyclist by cars, trucks, buses and motorcycles who are
traveling on the same narrow, twisting roads. Those who haven't had
that experience, I highly recommend it. Riding was pure euphoria. As
expected, the AF received a lot of attention by other cyclists and
bystanders. It was fun to look in my rear view mirror and watch the
heads turn in unison as we rode through small villages. The comment:
"strange bike" was heard on more than one occasion.

Now it's on to new adventures. Has anyone done the Raid Pyreneen, the
500-mile solo ride from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean? That
sounds like an inviting challenge.

Cheers
