I have had a range of upright bikes over the years, and I usually find
that after around 30-50 miles I get pains in the back, wrists,
shoulders, neck etc (and anyway have the usual lower back problems). But
I bought my first recumbent ten or so years ago and found the support in
the back area was terrific and enormously helpful. Of course, there are
disadvantages too, but everything in cycling's a compromise of one kind
or another and you just have to work out what suits you.
Which is why the best plan is to go somewhere you can try out a few
recumbents over the course of a day to see what suits you best. Not sure
where you're based, but in the UK there are several such dealers, and
usually you pay for the hire for a day but get it refunded if you
purchase a machine from them. Try it!
