We call them mobile telephones here. I suppose you could use a
walkie-talkie but I know from my own experience that doing most anything
else (that requires concentration on something else) while driving or
riding a bike can lead to sudden and sometimes unpleasant surprises --
if not for you, then for someone or something else.

With a mobile, I tend only to use it when needed, i.e., when I or
someone else is lost or misunderstood a direction. For the other rider,
getting a call means that it's something perhaps important, therefore
he/she stops and answers the call or reads the message.
