You'll be happy to know that I didn't make it more than 100 feet on my first ride before I stopped and adjusted the straps as indicated in the photo.  The good folks at Green Gear should take notice of the proper orientation of the strap including the twist beneath the pedal.  I agree that leather straps are superior but I tend not to cinch them tight so its not much of an issue for me.

As for reflectors, they are all going on before my next ride.  I don't ride at night without a red tail light, a Niterider Evolution headlight, and an Illuminite vest.  And I have two Schwalbe Marathon tires with reflective white sidewalls on backorder.
