To clarify, I don't think that the derailing that I have
experienced on the BF's is directly related to the use of single
chainrings - all the chainrings I use are comparatively tall in
the tooth (!).

When I get a spare moment, I do intend to shorten the chains
because I commonly ride the bikes with more closely spaced
cassettes than their stock issue - I think the chain is probably
slacker than it need be.

I agree that the single ring option (with or without hub gears)
suits my idea of a packable bike.
