[Yak] Bike shorts

I purchase shorts from Target. Last time I caught them on sale for $6 a
piece. I am very picky about them having a draw-string. No problems with
chaffing or bottom rash. Of course I just tour across different states.
Very little racing.

Often these drives come with a special USB cable that has two ends to plug
into your laptop. This allows them to get extra power. If your drive is
made by Lacie then they might not have included the special cable (a friend
had that experience) but if you call them then they'll mail it to you.

I haven't seen a disk that didn't work with the special double headed cable
but which worked with an external power supply.

One bought in Australia won't work unless it says it is safe for 110 or 220.
That is unlikely on an unregulated adapter.

I'd check with the manufacturer of the external disk. It is likely that the
6 volt/1 amp one will be okay, because the case should regulator it down to
5 volts.

The 500ma one isn't going to improve anything. Your laptop can already
deliver 500ma over USB.

If you are in a real crunch then you can probably buy a second external
enclosure with no disk installed that comes with the double headed USB cable
for under $20.

Greetings all!

Just a reminder to everyone.... perhaps we have someone new that doesn't
know this, or has just got in such a hurry, or....

For AOL users, please don't delete YAK messages by flagging them as Spam.
Yes, that removes them from your inbox, but it also ends up sending BF
(me) a message from AOL that we shouldn't be spamming the YAK list... But
of course AOL won't tell me who is doing it.... it's a weird bit of irony,
yes? ;)

If AOL gets enough of these things we'll get blacklisted from sending
messages to *all* the AOL users - that would be bad.

So please, be careful how you remove messages from your Inbox. That's what
the Delete button is for....

Thanks, and get out there and ride!

A gentleman who works as a bike mechanic whom I have known for almost ten
years now as he has gone from shop to shop locally was discussing bike
shorts with me last summer. He had been comped a very expensive pair of bike
shorts. As I recall, the retail on them was almost $200. He told me he, of
course, would never pop $200 for a pair of bike shorts but inasmuch as they
were free -- what the heck.
He said he usually buys shorts around $100 but never believed there was that
much difference between $100 shorts and $200 shorts, certainly not enough to
justify the extra hundred bucks -- BUT after trying the ultra expensive
shorts he said he just could not believe the difference in fit, feel,
ability to ride long distances without a bit of discomfort. He said while he
still probably wouldn't be able to buy the $200 shorts due to practical
considerations, if he had the money to do so, he would buy the more
expensive shorts in a new york second. This wasn't in a selling session
where he was trying to pitch the extra expensive shorts -- I don't think the
shop where he works even carries them -- we were just chewing the fat in
general and he mentioned that he had lucked into the really deluxe shorts. I
asked him if he thought they were worth the money and that's when he
launched into the story above. I don't work for any biking short company --
or any clothing company for that matter but inasmuch as we have been
discussing bike shorts recently, I thought I would throw that in for food
for thought. Mostly I ride around town in street clothing and only wear
biking shorts if I am going to ride more than 50 miles in one stretch. I
will wear bike shorts if I am doing a multi day ride even if the daily
mileage is only 50 miles a day. I do wear a helmet 100% of the time and I
try to wear a yellow or day glo green jacket when I ride. Other than that,
what I am wearing is what I wear.

Are you using the cable that came with the drive?

I have a drive that will only work with the cable supplied with it - no
other.

Check your adapters and make sure they'll work with 220, as the previous
poster suggested. Using one that's 110 rated in a 220 outlet is a quick way
to frytown (I've done this more than once, d***d JBL!)

The other possibility is either your drive is flaking out, or the power
output on the machine is flaking out - neither a good scenario. Best way to
check that out is to try it with another drive you know works on another
machine.

Best,

Subject: [Yak] A road warrior question....adaptor for hard drive

I realize this is a Radio Shack or Comp USA kind of question... Except
nobody at the store downunder could definitively tell me, Googling gives me
a PhD thesis in electronics I don't need and I have a deadline. So if an
electonically minded yakster can help me, I would appreciate it. (I realize
I've posted a couple of road warrior requests recently - cameras, online tax
- but when traveling especially overseas, I've found the Yak community a
lifesaver for all of us. Don't worry it won't escalate to flower arranging!)

Others stop reading now!

I have the latest Model T tikit packing videos on a pretty inexpensive
Simpletech 120GB external usb powered hard drive which is supposed to not
need a dc adaptor. But the drive is starting to power down mid-operation. Am
told I need to change the case, or buy a powered usb hub maybe, or find a 5V
1 amp DC adaptor to give it more juice. Want to try the latter first as the
thing is frozen almost done rendering a movie and maybe I can hey it to kick
in. Hunting around in my stuff I found a couple of adaptors with the right
connector I brought from the USA close to those specs but not quite
- a 6DC with 1 amp
- a 5.3DC with 500 mA
Both of them are unregulated, whatever that means.
Will either of these work?
What's the crucial thing here, volts or amps? Would an unregulated one
bought downunder work? Don't want to blow my drive up. Don't want to buy a
powered usb either as they are bulky to travel with. Changing the case is
what I'll try after the adaptor experiment, assuming I can. Tell me yes or
no off list. And thanks!

Hi there fellow BF riders.
I've organized a trip to Sulawesi, that spidery shaped Indonesian island
north of Bali. So far I'm the sole BF rider on the trip. I want some small
BF company. There's 5-6 spots left. Be great if all of them were filled by
BF riders. Check the trip out at http://www.bikefriday.com/cycleindonesia

It could be a weak or damaged derraileur spring. It could also (more
likely) be that the chain is just too long.
It may have come that way from Green Gear. There should be no problem in
back-pedalling once the bike is stopped in fact, you will need to do that
to get your feet in the best position to ride away from a traffic light
(although you would usually want to change down to a smaller sprocket before
you stop. Changing the deraileur while back-pedaling will mess things up,
but changing the internal hub while back-pedaling is OK.)

The best thing to do is to take your bike to your local bike shop (LBS),
explain the problem, and ask them for help --- assuming that
you have one (a LBS). The deraileur and shifting on a Friday are no
different from those on a big wheeled bike.

If you are the kind of guy who wants to fix this problem for yourself, as a
learning experience, the two places that I would start
are chain length and the setting of the "B" screw. This page may be
handy: http://www.exchangecycletours.org/rdadjustment.htm

Here is the Park tools page on chain length adjustment:
http://www.parktool.com/repair/readhowto.asp?id=26
Shimano and Sheldon Brown also have their say on how to choose the chain
length.

Apologies. My mistake. Tbere are two other BF riders making a total of
three. Where are you hiding, you BF riders interested in Indonesia? Only 5
-6 spots left. Colin
