I flew from Victoria to Quebec City on Air Canada in July with my BF in its suitcase and had no problems.  I had booked my tickets before the change in policy. I checked in 2 pieces of luggage, one of which was my BF, and no questions were asked as to contents.  Both pieces were under the 50 pound max.  I noticed a few scuff marks on my BF case when I picked it up on arrival and the that the slide out handle was banged a bit as it did not move as smoothly as before.   I had a great flight.
