[Yak] NWT vs. Llama

I too did the C&O on a NWT (and the GAP) between Pittsburgh and DC. It worked great except for the use of a two wheel trailer on the C&O. But that is the same issue for either the NWT or PL. I haven't ridden the PL. I use 1.35 Primo Comets as tires. I did carry a spare tire, but didn't need it. The idea of being able to get a wider "Walmart tire" for use in a pinch would be nice, but unless you are in a really remote part of the world. I have to believe ordinary conservative planning should work in that regard for the most part given the somewhat increasing use of recumbents with smaller and thinner tires. The only time I have really felt wider tires would be a benefit was when I was on some Texas gravel roads where the gravel was sharp and pointy and about 2 inches in diameter. Smaller than that I have felt fine with the Primo Comets. I have only had one flat due to punctures in about 5k miles.
Then again, if the PL takes wider tires and doesn't add much weight, I think I would do that, even if I used the thinner tires. I know I have more than a couple pounds of personal "spare tire" I could lose to easily compensate for that bit of added weight. Then again, carrying a spare tire for the NWT wasn't a big deal either.

I haven't ridden the PL, but I just took my NWT up the C&O Trail to Cumberland, MD. (wanted to get to Pittsburgh), and it rode great. No problems whatsoever. Made me love the bike even more.
