Mike, I'd recommend taking one of those damaged cog triads and hitting  
it with a hammer.  You'll quickly find the only thing welding them  
together is rust or dirt or anything but actual welding.  There's a  
splined interface between the cogs but that is it.  Feel free to call  
service if you don't believe me.
