I've been building headlights out of LED flashlights, hose clamps, duct
tape and rubber or plastic shims; they work well in many and varied
local lighting conditions, I can stick standard rechargeable batteries
in them, and over the last two years I have yet to get one ripped off in
front of the Eugene Public Library, which is pretty much the ultimate
test of theft-resistance. Wald also makes a clamp which will let you
put a full-sized headlight on your handlebars, which looks pretty good
if you want to take the light off and carry it with you (I don't).
Why nobody is manufacturing head and tail lights with metal clamps for
the urban/commuter market, I have no idea. No, the racing types
wouldn't be enthusiastic, but those of us who park our bikes on the
street and don't want to strip them of everything shiny each time we
duck in somewhere to run an errand would probably buy a lot of them.
