[Yak] shoe recomendation

+1 for sandals. I have used spd mountain bike shoes, with and without the fitting and have used power grips with various shoes and sandals, even flip flops. Now I just use Tevas. I guess it also depends on the goal of the clips and the goal of the ride. The discussion on hard soles, etc. helps for efficiency, so if that's the goal, go in that direction. For comfort, I like sandals.
FWIW, I ran into a younger lady in her 20's doing the Southern Tier cross country (not on a BF). She was wearing flip flops and toe clips and said she was usually doing centuries. She was light enough packed that I believed her. (she just had a small duffel on a rack and stayed in churches and such) And this was in west Texas and she started in CA, so it would have been a pretty good BS story and for not much reason. But anyway, I suggest to try them all based on the goal for the ride.

I’ve had mine for 8-10 years now
and keep expecting them to fall apart. Mine are toeless and the new ones have
covered toes. I really love the toeless shoes (can anyone explain to me how one
could possibly get one’s toes caught in the front tire’s spokes?),
but they’ve apparently been discontinued. I now tour with a spare pair of
Keen’s in case my Shimanos finally do fall apart.

I really like my Shimano Sandals. I live in
California and wear them
all year round - plus they last forever. I think I've had mine about 4 years
and they are still going strong.
