I pack my '97 NWT with the wheels to the right -- turned 180 degrees 
from how it is shown in the '97 manual, in the older Samsonite case 
which rolls upright. (Casters are on the narrow side.) That way, the 
wheels can sit low in the case because the rear wheel isn't trapped 
on top of the handle recess. I've been using the derailer protector 
and I've never had a problem with it -- but I will give problems 
other people have described some thought!
